Ten minutes later, Maggie returned to the kitchen wearing mascara, jeans, and a Red Sox T-shirt. “Did you get in touch with your Chechen?” she asked.

“You’re a hopeless romantic, aren’t you?”

Maggie scanned Roger’s face for more information. “Excuse me?”

“The Red Sox. You wear that shirt because you’re eternally hopeful that someday they might win it all.”

“They might. They’ll make the playoffs this year.” She crossed her arms over the red stocking logo. “Possibly.”

“Yeah, keep dreaming.” He swung an imaginary baseball bat. “Besides, they’re cursed. They’ll never get past the Yankees.”

“Whatever.” They could argue sports later. “Roger, your Chechen?”

“He’s not answering his office phone and I don’t have his cell number.”

“I say we head over there anyway. He might be avoiding your call.”

“Or he might be at home because it’s nine o’clock at night.”

“We have to get these documents translated.”

“I know. When I finally go see him, you’re not coming in with me. This is my source, not yours. Got it?”

“Absolutely, Roger.”
